Terms of service
Effective April 2026 · Last updated: April 2026
Plain-language summary: AffordMap shows you government salary data with our own affordability calculations layered on top. It's free, it's not professional advice, and we make money through ads and affiliate links that never touch the data. The full terms follow.
1. Agreement
These Terms of Service ("Terms") are a legally binding agreement between you and AffordMap ("we," "us," "our"). By accessing or using AffordMap.com (the "Site"), you agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Site.
2. What the Site does
AffordMap presents wage, employment, and cost-of-living data published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and other federal agencies, and combines it with our own derived calculations (tax estimates, affordability metrics, purchasing-power adjustments) to help users understand compensation in context. Our Disclaimer page explains exactly which figures come from government sources and which are our estimates.
3. This is not professional advice
Nothing on AffordMap constitutes financial, tax, legal, employment, or investment advice. All salary data, tax calculations, affordability estimates, negotiation ranges, and employer cost figures are informational approximations. They are derived from public data and simplified models that do not account for your specific deductions, credits, benefits, local taxes, employment terms, or personal circumstances. Your actual results will differ - in some cases, materially.
Before making decisions about compensation, relocation, hiring, tax planning, or career changes, consult a qualified professional (CPA, licensed financial advisor, attorney, or career counselor) who can evaluate your individual situation.
4. Data accuracy and freshness
We make reasonable efforts to present government data accurately, but we do not warrant that any information on the Site is complete, current, or error-free. Key limitations:
- BLS wage data is typically 12-18 months old at the time of publication.
- Occupation classifications are broad and may not reflect your specific role.
- Our derived calculations (tax estimates, affordability metrics) use simplified models and published rates that may not reflect your actual obligations.
- Small sample sizes in less-populated areas may produce less reliable estimates.
Per BLS policy: "BLS.gov cannot vouch for the data or analyses derived from these data after the data have been retrieved from BLS.gov." We are not responsible for errors in government source data or in our processing of it. If you spot an error, please email corrections@affordmap.com and we will investigate promptly.
5. Affiliate links and advertising
AffordMap earns revenue through display advertising and affiliate partnerships with job boards, education platforms, payroll services, and other providers. When you click an affiliate link and complete a qualifying action (sign-up, purchase, etc.), we may receive a commission at no additional cost to you.
These relationships do not influence the salary data, cost-of-living figures, government statistics, or derived calculations shown on the Site. Government data is presented without modification for commercial purposes. Affiliate links are identified by context (e.g., "View jobs," "Compare programs") and typically direct you to third-party websites governed by their own terms and privacy policies.
6. Intellectual property
The underlying salary and economic data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and other federal agencies is in the public domain under 17 U.S.C. § 105. All other elements of the Site - including the design, code, layout, original text, tools, proprietary calculations, the AffordMap name and brand, and the compiled presentation of data - are owned by AffordMap and protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws.
You may not reproduce, scrape, mirror, or create derivative works from the Site or its contents without our prior written consent, except: (a) reasonable personal, non-commercial use; and (b) use of our embeddable widgets according to the widget embed terms displayed with those widgets.
7. API and automated access
Access to the AffordMap API, whether free or paid, is subject to rate limits and any additional terms presented at the time of registration. Automated access to the Site outside of the API (scraping, crawling beyond robots.txt allowances, or systematic downloading) is prohibited without prior written permission. We reserve the right to restrict or terminate access for violations.
8. Calculator and tool outputs
Our interactive tools (take-home pay calculator, salary negotiation analyzer, employer cost calculator, relocation calculator, and cost-of-living comparator) produce estimates based on simplified models. By using these tools, you acknowledge that:
- Results are approximations and may differ materially from your actual financial situation.
- Tax calculations do not account for all deductions, credits, local taxes, pre-tax contributions, or individual filing circumstances.
- Salary negotiation scripts and percentile assessments are informational templates, not personalized career advice.
- Experience-level recommendations are general guidelines derived from statistical distributions, not individualized assessments of your qualifications.
- You assume all risk for any decisions made based on tool outputs.
- Calculator inputs you enter are processed in your browser and are not stored on our servers or shared with third parties.
9. User conduct
You agree not to: (a) use the Site in any way that violates applicable law; (b) attempt to interfere with or disrupt the Site's infrastructure; (c) misrepresent your affiliation with AffordMap or any government agency; (d) reproduce our content in a way that implies government endorsement; or (e) use the Site to build a competing service by systematically extracting our proprietary calculations or presentation layer.
10. Disclaimers and limitation of liability
THE SITE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE." To the fullest extent permitted by law, AffordMap disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, AffordMap's total aggregate liability to you for any claims arising from or related to your use of the Site shall not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim, or (b) fifty U.S. dollars ($50). In no event shall AffordMap be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including lost profits, lost data, or loss of goodwill, regardless of the theory of liability.
Some jurisdictions do not allow exclusion of certain warranties or limitations of liability, so some of the above may not apply to you. In such cases, our liability is limited to the minimum extent permitted by law.
11. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless AffordMap, its owners, and its affiliates from and against any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use of the Site, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any applicable law.
12. Dispute resolution
Any dispute arising from these Terms or your use of the Site shall be resolved through binding arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association under its Consumer Arbitration Rules, conducted individually (not as a class action) in the state where AffordMap's principal place of business is located. You agree to waive any right to a jury trial or participation in a class action. Either party may seek injunctive relief in a court of competent jurisdiction to prevent irreparable harm pending arbitration.
13. Governing law
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Florida, without regard to its conflict-of-law principles.
14. Modifications
We may update these Terms at any time by posting the revised version with an updated effective date. Material changes will be noted at the top of this page. Your continued use of the Site after changes are posted constitutes acceptance. If you disagree with a change, your remedy is to stop using the Site.
15. General provisions
If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full effect. Our failure to enforce any provision is not a waiver of that provision. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy and Disclaimer, constitute the entire agreement between you and AffordMap regarding your use of the Site and supersede any prior agreements on the same subject.
